In the Alps, about 57 kilometers of tunnel connect northern and southern Europe through solid rock. Trains pass through it at speed, passengers barely noticing. Above them, the mountain rises more than two kilometers. The rock weighs billions of tons. None of that weight is allowed to collapse into the bore. A team of engineers figured out exactly how to hold it — reading the rock, supporting weak zones as they advanced, and lining the bore so that the pressure was transferred into a stable structure. The tunnel is civilization's act of will against geology. Where the bridge goes over an obstacle in plain sight, the tunnel goes straight through it, hidden, carrying the weight of everything above it on walls of steel and concrete.
