Florence Nightingale saved more lives with a diagram than with a nursing kit. Her 1858 polar area chart — showing that the vast majority of soldier deaths in the Crimean War were from preventable disease rather than battle wounds — was designed to persuade politicians and generals who would not read tables. It worked: sanitary reform followed. Nightingale understood something most scientists of her era did not: data does not speak for itself.
