Nicolaus Copernicus

The Polish churchman and astronomer who, working quietly for decades, proposed that the Earth and planets orbit a central Sun and that the Earth spins daily on its axis — a sun-centered cosmos that displaced the Earth from its ancient place at the center and opened the revolution in astronomy that Kepler and Galileo would carry forward, even though Copernicus himself kept the perfect circles of the ancients and a model barely simpler than the one he replaced.

Nicolaus Copernicus did the unthinkable on paper: he stopped the Sun and set the Earth in motion. For two thousand years, learned Europe had known the Earth stood still at the center of everything, with Sun, Moon, and stars wheeling around it. Copernicus argued instead that the Earth is just one planet, spinning each day and circling the Sun like the rest. He was no martyr for the idea. He was a respected Church canon who died in 1543, the year his book appeared, reportedly seeing a printed copy only as he lay dying. The Church would not condemn his cosmos for another seventy years. What he launched was not a finished science but a single, world-altering thought: that we are not the center.
