The Microscope

The instrument that magnifies the very small — using shaped lenses, and later beams of electrons, to make visible what the unaided eye cannot reach. Robert Hooke's Micrographia (1665) named the 'cell'; Antonie van Leeuwenhoek saw living microorganisms in the 1670s; and centuries later the microscope helped make germ theory provable by letting scientists see the microbes that cause disease, founded cell biology, and — once light's wavelength was bypassed by the electron microscope — reached viruses, molecules, and atoms.

Put a drop of pond water under the right piece of shaped glass and it is not empty. It teems. Tiny living things dart and spin in it, a whole population no human eye had ever seen. In the 1670s a Dutch cloth merchant was the first person to look at that swarming world. The microscope kept redrawing the boundary of the real: first life too small to see, then the cells all bodies are built from, then the very microbes that cause disease, and at last, through electron and probe microscopes, the atoms themselves. A piece of glass, ground to a curve, found a universe in a droplet.
