The Loom

The frame that turned thread into cloth and, in the form of the Jacquard's punched cards, turned a pattern into a program — making the loom not just the engine of humanity's first industry but a direct ancestor of the computer.

In the early 1800s, a silk weaver in Lyon named Joseph Marie Jacquard built a loom that read punched cards to choose which threads to lift. The pattern lived on the cards, not inside the loom; the machine simply did as it was told. Decades later, Charles Babbage borrowed that punched-card idea for his Analytical Engine — and in 1843 Ada Lovelace saw the link exactly, describing how the engine would weave patterns in numbers just as the loom wove them in thread. Programmable computing did not merely borrow a metaphor from weaving; one of its key early mechanisms, the punched card, passed through the loom.
