In 1901, sponge divers hauling nets off the Greek island of Antikythera pulled up a corroded lump of bronze from a shipwreck roughly two thousand years old. Inside, once the corrosion was cleared away, were at least thirty interlocking gear wheels of extraordinary precision. This was not a tool for lifting or grinding.
