The Dam

A barrier built across flowing water to store, control, and redirect it — one of humanity's oldest and most ambitious works, and the technology through which states have seized authority over rivers, delivering water, power, and flood safety to some while displacing, drying, or drowning others.

When engineers finished the Hoover Dam in 1936, they had turned the Colorado River into a tool. Behind the dam, a reservoir stretched back across the canyon — water that had once run to the sea, held still at elevation, waiting to be released on someone's schedule. The dam could water farms in three states, light a city, moderate floods, and support drinking-water systems for millions across the Southwest. It could also drown a valley. It buried farms, homesteads, and Native land under what officials named Lake Mead. The engineering was extraordinary. What it reveals is the larger story: every great dam is also a political act. The dam is where engineering meets sovereignty — the most concrete way humans have ever seized control of a river.
