Inorganic materials hardened by fire — above all fired clay — that represent humanity's first synthetic material: an irreversible chemical transformation of earth into something new, running unbroken from the earliest cooking pot to the heat shields of spacecraft.

Long after people had fired small clay figurines, someone in East Asia — roughly twenty thousand years ago — shaped wet clay into a vessel, fired it, and made one of the earliest known ceramic containers. Not reshaped stone, not bent metal, not woven fiber. Something transformed. The heat had driven off the water and fused the clay minerals into a hard, water-resistant, irreversible solid. The pot that resulted could hold water, store grain, cook food. Everything the person had before — baskets, hides, hollowed wood — could leak or rot or burn. This could not. Ceramics was not just a new object. It was a new idea: that fire could chemically change earth into something earth had never been.
