The powdered binder — most importantly Portland cement, made by calcining limestone and clay at extreme heat — that, when mixed with water, undergoes a chemical reaction called hydration and hardens into a stone-like solid. Cement is the active ingredient in concrete, mortar, and most modern masonry. It is the active ingredient in concrete, the most-used manufactured material after water, and its production is one of the largest single sources of human carbon emissions on earth.
Pick up a handful of grey powder and mix it with water. Within hours, it begins to harden. Within days, it is as strong as stone. This is cement: a powder so ordinary that most people cannot describe what it does, yet so fundamental that the roads, buildings, bridges, dams, and sewers of modern civilization would not exist without it. Cement is not concrete. Cement is the binder — the active chemistry — that turns sand and gravel into concrete. People say 'cement' when they mean 'concrete' constantly, and the confusion matters: cement is roughly 10 to 15 percent of a concrete mix by weight, but it is the ingredient that does all the work. Each tonne of Portland cement releases close to a tonne of carbon dioxide — often around 0.8 to 0.9 tonnes, depending on the process. Global production now runs to roughly 4 billion tonnes a year. That makes cement production responsible for roughly 7 to 8 percent of global CO₂ emissions — counting both kiln fuel and the limestone itself — more than aviation or shipping. The powder that glues the built world together is also one of the biggest climate problems humanity has not yet solved.
