The colonial revolt that established the first modern republic, created the template for constitutional self-government, produced founding documents whose contradictions between universal rights and racial slavery structured American politics for a century, and became the reference point for anti-colonial movements across two centuries
The American Revolution is the only successful large-scale anti-colonial revolt in the 18th century. It produced the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. It also left slavery intact and created a political framework that would require a civil war, a constitutional amendment, and a century of subsequent struggle to partially fulfill its founding promises. The contradiction between "all men are created equal" and the enslavement of 500,000 people was visible to contemporaries. They left it unresolved anyway.
